Fasting

In a short answer, yes! Dogs were not designed to eat at specific times every single day. They ate what they could when they could.

This may seem to hit the emotional side of you, the thought of withholding food from our dogs for a full day or even a meal can seem cruel but studies show that an animal’s nerve cells are more resistant to degeneration (breakdown) when they follow a routine of fasting.

This happens because cells are under mild stress and this enhances their ability to cope with stress which in turn can help resist disease.

When done correctly fasting can also reduce blood pressure, regenerate the immune system, improve kidney function, help insulin sensitivity, and enhance brain function.

Fasting and starvation are not the same. Starvation occurs when the animal is not consuming anything and there are no reserves left in the body therefore vital tissues are broken down.

As always, you should speak with your vet to make sure you dog doesn’t have any limitations. Their may be times where fasting wouldn’t be appropriate.

Something important to remember is that fasting does not include withholding water, just food.

Have you ever tried fasting with your dog?
