ink for many of us, if we give our dogs raw food, we see the necessity in cleaning their bowls-it’s a no-brainer-especially because it can be potentially dangerous to the humans.
But what if you don’t feed raw, should you still be washing your dog’s bowls?
I’m not going to lie, I used to be that person that just didn’t see the point in washing them daily-my dogs always did a great job of licking their entire bowl clean, leaving nothing, not even a speck, behind. I mean, they are dogs right, aren’t they meant to handle this type of bacteria?
But my perception completely changed a few years ago when I learned about biofilm; you know, that slimy stuff you feel on your dog’s bowl after days of not washing it…it is a harmful bacteria that can cause a plethora of health issues to your dog (and YOU!). The bacteria from your dog‘s mouth, mixed with the oils from his food creates this slimy goo in their bowl. And every time your dog eats, that bacteria enters his mouth, creating more of a build up-which can eventually lead to health issues.
Some of those health issues are: -dental plaque, leading to periodontal diseases -systemic inflammation -cardiovascular diseases -urinary tract infections -chronic kidney disease
You can however prevent your dog from this harmful bacteria by washing their bowls after every feeding with soap and warm water. You can even stick them in the dishwasher. I like to do that once a week. I would suggest using a separate brush or sponge that is dedicated just to your dog’s bowls. And don’t forget those water bowls too; even the fountain types! These should be rinsed out daily but can be washed weekly.
Fun (Gross) Fact: One study done by National Science Foundation International looked for the dirtiest places in people’s homes and coming in 4th place were pets’ food and water bowls!!!
The quality of these dog treats is second to none. I feel so good knowing I’m feeding my dog 100% grass fed beef! He deserves only the best and Patriot Pup delivers!
