What do you want

This should be one of the first things we think about when we decide to acquire a dog.
Why do you want a dog?
What do you want the dog for?
What do you want the dog to be able to do?
How active would you like the dog to be? How social would you like the dog to be? How much drive would you like your dog to have?

There are many people out there who don’t put any thought into it at all but the result can be disastrous. They have preconceived notions as to what owning a dog would be like and believe all dogs are the same only to be disappointed and possibly even resentful when the dog in front of them is not the one they imagined.

When choosing a dog it is super important that you begin with looking at the dog’s temperament. Are you looking for a dog that is confident and sturdy and can handle challenges? Or are you looking for a dog that is a little more fragile and soft and just requires your love and attention?

Another area that you would want to look at is the dog’s energy level, are you the kind of owner that is looking for an adventure buddy or a couch buddy?

The next best thing would be to then research the breed. Find out the common characteristics among that breed. It’s important to pay attention to what that breed was designed to do so you will know how to fulfill their needs. Also make note of their grooming and health needs. This can vary from breed to breed. You may be shocked to find out what some dogs require.

Your training experience should also be considered. If you are a novice trainer it may not be the best idea to go right into a super high-drive, energetic dog.

If we do the research beforehand and really find a dog that meshes well with our own personality, it will save you a lot of heartache in the end.
