Train the dog in front of you

You often hear a lot of people using this phrase in the dog training world. It is a very literal phrase though-train the dog in front of you literally means train the dog that is right in front of you.

This doesn’t mean train with the idea that your dog will become the dog you have always dreamed of. Or the dog will become like your neighbor’s dog, a friend’s dog or a dog you’ve seen on TV.

It means work with what you have, here and now. Do not plan on trying to change your dog’s personality or temperament but instead change your training methods to match your dog’s personality.

This means be intentional in your training for THAT dog. Don’t just go through the motions of what you normally do or what you see everyone else doing.

Take into consideration the environments & experiences you incorporate in your training plan so that they are ones that help to make your dog a strong, responsive, confident and eager learner.

Tailor your training to meet the needs of the dog in front of you🐾
