Expectations

Some of us have such high expectations for our dogs. We want them to be well mannered inside. We want them to be well mannered outside. We want to be able to take them out in public, into shops, into breweries, and to coffee stands, all while maintaining focus on the handler and ignoring every distraction out there. We want them to be able to lay down and not get up. We want them to tuck under our legs and never move. We want them to be able to see a dog and have no reaction but we also want them to be friendly with the people that they meet and we want them to know when it’s OK to accept love and when they should ignore it.

Dogs that are well mannered in public spaces have been trained tirelessly to do so.
Everything that you see a well-behaved public-dog doing all starts in the home.

Then we move on to directly outside our home. And we slowly advance to places a little further from our home, be it in your neighborhood, a nearby park, or a friend’s house.

This type of behavior that we all wish our dogs exhibited does not just magically happen. It takes work, hard work and dedication.

So if you find yourself out in public with your dog and he is not performing the way you’d like him to, it’s important that you ask yourself, are your expectations realistic? Have you prepared your dog for these type of scenarios? Is your dog well exercised? Does your dog have impulse control within the home? Outside your home? Are you able to grab your dog’s focus and engage with him during any type of scenario?

We often look at the end goal and go straight for it but there are so many stepping stones that need to be laid before you reach the end. So don’t forget all those little steps in between that must be worked on to reach your goals.
