Use a leash

Two of my favorite tools to use when I first start training any dog are a leash and treats.

Leashes are used to help direct the learning dog, a guide to show then which direction we want them to go in. In the early stages of learning, your dog may not know too many verbal cues yet, so the leash allows us to communicate without confusing them with our over abundance of words.

Treats or rewards help your training to be more effective as well. They are our motivators. It helps us to pay the dog for all the work they are putting in.
