Rewards

So many people think that rewards should be just during training. And once the dog learns the skill we can stop rewarding. That couldn’t be further from the truth.

I’m sure you are great at your job and you’ve been there for sometime now, but nobody has stopped paying you to show up every day and put in the work. And if they did stop, you probably wouldn’t show up anymore. So we should not expect anything different from our dogs.

We do not train our dogs with the idea that they should comply just because we said so. We train them with the idea that we can motivate them to show them that complying is beneficial for them. But how can we make it beneficial for them???

By rewarding them!

So don’t ever stop! You can definitely slow the frequency in your rewards, but rewards should never be removed completely from your dog’s daily routine.
