Training is inevitable

Training for your dog is always occurring whether you realize it or not. What’s important to know though is you have control over that training. You can have control over what you want your dog
to know and what you want your dog to understand.

Dogs pick up on things throughout our daily routine even if we’re not intentionally training them to do so, they’re going to figure it out, they watch everything we do and pick up on the patterns of our own behaviors very easily. But we have control over how we want them to perceive those patterns.

Here is an example:
Your dog most likely knows his name because you use it on a daily basis, your dog has figured out that when you use his name and he comes to you, it makes you happy. Sometimes he may even get a little treat or a pat on the head. He was able to figure this out without you actually providing any intentional training; it was just part of your daily routine. But unfortunately without intentional training or being intentional with your expectations, your dog also learns that it may not always be beneficial for him to come to you when you have used his name. How did he learn this? Because we unintentionally showed him that.

Perhaps we got annoyed with him for doing something and when he came back, he was reprimanded. Or every time we call him when outdoors, we’re taking him away from something fun.

So you have the control to help your dog perceive what you ask of him as something beneficial. You have the control of helping your dog see that what you ask of him is in his best interest-that you are a fair and predictable provider. But you can’t just expect it, you have to show it consistently-and we usually do this through intentional training.
