Puppies have a very short attention span so we are not looking for disciplined obedience at this point in time. We want to build a solid foundation so that when we are ready for advanced obedience it will be a smooth transition.

Aside from crate training and potty training there are some basic commands you can start working on with your puppy right away.

It is important to note first that during this time your attitude is critical to the progress of your puppy. It is important that you do not show any frustration or anger. Puppies have a way of frustrating us at times and that’s OK but you cannot act upon those frustrations. You do not want your puppy to fear you nor do you want your puppy to lack confidence as an adult.

One of the first things I like to help a puppy learn is their name. You can do this through games or every time she looks at you say her name in a light and cheery tone.

The first three commands I typically like to teach are:

Come
Sit
Down

We are not expecting precision discipline here, just the basic form. You can do this throughout parts of your day such as meal time. Not only will your puppy be learning the different commands but they’re also learning who is in control and who they must pay attention to.

The next post will discuss how you can introduce a leash and collar to your puppy.
