When acquiring a puppy, there are many different things to consider before the puppy steps even one paw in your home.

To start, have a conversation with the other household members. What will the puppy’s routine look like, who will participate? Where will the dog go potty? Which rooms is the puppy allowed in? Where will she rest? Who will be home during the day to prevent the puppy from being alone for too long? What supplies will you need? (i.e. leash, collar, bowls, brushes). Who will groom the puppy?

It is also important to research the best breed-specific grooming practices as well as a high-quality food to give your puppy.

If there are young children in the house, discuss their roles as well. They should NOT be given the sole responsibility to take care of the puppy, children are still learning and growing, just like the puppy but you can discuss how they must act around the puppy, for example, minimize (or prohibit) squealing, hugging, kissing, teasing and rough-housing.

And most importantly, understand that training starts on day one but first you must be aware of how a dog learns (as well as how they don’t learn) and how they communicate. You must be focused on providing for your dog’s needs. Dogs do not know what is best for them, so it is up to you to show them.

The next post will discuss why this is important and what it may look like.
