Potty Training

The most important factor when potty training your dog is ROUTINE. This is not about building up a routine where your dog tells YOU when they have to go out. It’s about you building a routine to show your dog that they will be let out on a regular basis. This is crucial because it allows your dog to learn how to hold it therefore, increasing their bladder control.

But what does this routine look like?

It starts with supervision. Never leave your puppy or new dog to roam freely through your house. This is typically when accidents happen, the moment your eyes are off of them they will find a place to go.

Keep a leash on your dog so that if an accident does happen you can calmly take the leash and bring them outside.

If you cannot supervise them at any particular moment, utilize their crate, a playpen or you can tether them to a heavy piece of furniture. You can even tether them to yourself!

Pay attention to how often your dog needs to eliminate. If you notice they’re having accidents every hour, then you’ll want to take them out every 40 minutes. Set a timer on your phone, it’s so hard for us to stick with a routine when we are so busy ourselves, so the timer will help to remind you.

Always let your dog out after playtime, feeding, drinking, training, crate time or nap.

And be consistent. If you feel like things have been going well and then all of a sudden they’re not, most of the time it’s because we have become complacent and have eased up on our routine. So always be reflective and think about what you might be missing in your routine.

Sticking to a routine will ensure that your dog doesn’t have opportunities to use your house as a toilet therefore you are creating memories of only ever using the outside areas as a place to eliminate. When we ease up on the routine before the dog is ready, we are allowing more opportunities for your dog to go in your house therefore creating more memories that can be difficult to fade away.
