Choosing a puppy

There are so many dog owners who acquire a dog but truly do not know what it entails.
I’d like to give just a quick list of things to consider before acquiring a dog.

And if any of these things seem out of reach, impossible, too expensive, or that you don’t have enough time – then I strongly recommend you reconsider getting a dog. These are non-negotiables and it’s OK if your lifestyle cannot match that of a dog’s but it’s not OK to recognize that and still get one anyway.

Personality-
Dogs have different personalities just like humans do. It’s important to match your own personality with that of the dog. For example if you are the type of person who is active, always on the go, then a high energy dog would be best for you but if you are an introvert, or laid-back and easy-going you might need a dog that is more affectionate and lower energy.

Lifestyle-
Another important factor to consider is how much time do you actually have available to spend with a dog? Are you prepared to groom your dog every day or would you rather a dog that requires less maintenance? Are you gone for several hours a day, if so would you be willing to pay for a dog walker? Do you enjoy playing and training? Do you have time and motivation to do this every day? It’s not to say that you need to spend every waking moment with your dog but you need to be prepared to interact with them on a daily basis.

Environment-
I truly believe that all dogs can adapt to any environment whether it be the city, suburbs, or country but what’s going to matter is your lifestyle. How much time is that dog spending in that environment? Are they getting enough exercise and exploration time? It’s important that you do not select a dog whose size or activity levels exceed what you or your environment can offer.

Lack of time, money or experience are not good excuses when it comes to providing for your dog’s needs. They require a lot of time and attention-it is not a one time fee with the breeder or rescue-so be prepared to dish out money, time, love, patience, and guidance for the remainder of the dog’s life.
