Choosing a breeder

“Adopt don’t shop”…. This is such a controversial topic, but I personally admire both sides.

You have the right to choose where you adopt your dog from but I do think it’s important that we choose organizations that have the dog’s best interest at heart.

Rescuing a dog can be a wonderful experience and a lot of rescue organizations do such a good job of making sure they place the dog with the right family. They are also a little more cost-efficient, and you can get a dog a lot quicker than with a breeder but you cannot be guaranteed the dog will be healthy in body and mind-and for some people that isn’t a deal breaker, so rescuing is a great option for them. In fact, my last three adoptions have all been rescues.

What I really want to discuss is acquiring a dog through a breeder. I, for one, am all for a responsible, reputable breeder producing stable-minded, healthy dogs. Being a trainer I see first hand the effects that irresponsible breeding can cause.

So what does it mean to be a responsible breeder?

In short, it means that the breeder is more interested in bettering the breed, producing healthy dogs with sound temperaments.

They’re not interested in breeding their pet dog because they think it’s cute. They are not interested in your money. And they are not looking to just get rid of the puppies.

But there’s really so much more to it. So in the next post I will give you a list of things to look out for when considering a reputable breeder.
