Learning to settle is a practice that every dog should go through. Most only practice settling within the home, because this is where the dog spends the majority of their day; but learning to settle outdoors is equally important.

So how do we achieve this?

We always start indoors; The least distracting environment and we build up from there. By using an elevated dog bed, we can practice the place command.

Once your dog has reliable obedience indoors, then it’s important to practice this outdoors. But you will not start with where you left off indoors. In fact you will most likely be starting right from the beginning however you will notice that you may be able to advance a little faster than when you originally started.

Also something important to note, I wouldn’t go straight outside to your first public place, I would start outside your own house, then maybe your sidewalk, then somewhere in your neighborhood, then a public park, pet friendly shops and then my favorite-a brewery.

As you can see, like anything else in dog training, it takes time and patience, so don’t rush it, only advance when your dog is showing you that he/she is ready.
