Reward Variations: how much should I reward my dog?

A lot of people wonder: “How many treats should I give my dog when I’m rewarding him?”

The answer is a little bit and sometimes a lot!

What do I mean?

For most of our training, my dogs will typically receive one piece of their freeze-dried kibble-a low value reward-per task. For example; I may ask my dog to sit and then I mark and reward with one piece. OR I may ask my dog to come, then sit, then down and then mark and reward.

However if we are doing something that’s new or challenging, I may change that up. When my Doberman, Lincoln, was working through reactivity we either did a food scatter with his kibble on a small spot of grass as dogs walked by OR as he advanced, he got one slice of a hot dog (super high value) as he walked passed dogs.
The more challenging the task, the higher the reward-either through quantity or quality!
