Is it true?

We often hear many people say this but how true is this really? We see how eager dogs are to follow through but is it really a desire to please US?

Or is it a desire to please THEMSELVES?

If dogs wanted nothing more than to please us then we really wouldn’t need much training, would we? They would not have any bad habits and they would obey out of their simple desire to please us. But that isn’t the case. Many dogs do have bad habits and so we do need training.

When we provide our dogs with consistent good training, it helps us to live peacefully together but what we are actually doing is teaching them the benefits of cooperating with us, we are showing them that we control the resources, and we can give them everything they need. So essentially, they follow through with our requests, not because they want to please us but because it is pleasing to them!

This doesn’t mean your dog doesn’t love you and of course they are happy when we are happy but they have their own minds and they most likely won’t do something if they feel it is dangerous or it puts them at a disadvantage.

So keep providing your dog with many opportunities that shows him you are the source of all goodness so you can ultimately be the center of his universe.
