There could be a few reasons if you notice your dog responding in this way. One of the most common reasons has a lot to do with the owner’s energy. During a training session the owner in that moment is feeling relaxed and confident and isn’t worrying about the dog not complying. The dog picks up on this positive, relaxed but confident attitude and trusts the human, therefore following through with the given commands.

Now fast forward to a real life situation, the owner may feel bothered, interrupted, nervous, anxious, angry, sometimes these emotions have nothing to do with your dog either, it could be due to a bad day at work, a fight with your partner, or running late for an appointment; regardless the dog senses these emotions immediately and is less likely to trust and follow through, because in that moment, the human seems unstable.

It is hard to change our emotions but what you can change is how you train. If you know there is a particular scenario that you and your dog struggle within daily life…..throw it into your training! Intentional training is so important in helping us all follow through. Training through typical scenarios that you see in your every day life repetitively so that it becomes second nature to you and your dog will help to eliminate some of these emotions; it will become so habitual
that you will have no difficulty leading your dog with confidence.
