Typically when we have a particular issue we are dealing with concerning our dog’s behavior, a behavior modification plan must be set in place however management is typically the first step to success!
Management focuses on controlling a dog’s environment to the point where it prevents any opportunities allowing the dog to engage in that unwanted behavior. This helps to set the dog up for success.
This also provides safety for the dog as well as the humans living with that dog.
For example, if you have a dog that resource guards socks, management would include the humans removing socks from any place the dog is going to be. We remove the opportunity of the dog ever being able to grab a sock in the first place.
We may also work on some emergency strategies in case a dog does happen to get a sock, but when it comes to management it really is more about controlling the environment and the opportunities you’re giving your dog to participate in that undesirable behavior.
Depending on the severity of the dog’s behavior, sometimes management is all you need but other times training to counter-condition your dog’s response is also necessary, management is just the first step that is needed for many of these types of situations, so never discount it as part of your progress, because it is a necessary part needed for both dog and human to move forward.
Stay tuned for tomorrow’s post on resource guarding.
