Who is the protector?

Whenever my Doberman does something silly we laugh and say, “haha, some protection dog🙄” but to be honest, I never really expected him to protect me. In fact, I never ever expect any dog to protect me. It is the other way around.

Now, there may be some situations in life that it does happen where your dog may protect you from a wild animal or can tell you are in distress when a dangerous person is approaching you, but it’s never an expectation we should have for our pet dogs.

Even if your dog has it in his genetics, where he was designed for protection work, it does not mean that he will know how to do this without training.

Dogs have the mentality of a toddler. I wouldn’t expect my children to be my protectors, it is I who should be protecting them.

It’s important that we lose this mentality that our dogs are there to protect us just because they are predators. Unless they are specifically trained for this task, we would be putting too much pressure on the dog to be able to make good decisions and determine right from wrong. We would be putting them in the leadership position, a position most dogs do not do well with, in fact, they are pretty horrible at it. This mentality will only result in a dog who exhibits the kind of behavior we tend to complain about. We cannot put a dog in a leadership position in one situation and then expect them to follow us in another.

A dog can be an amazing protector but only when trained. So if you do not plan on providing this type of training for your dog, then remind yourself that you are the protector in this relationship, not your dog.
