Sleep 2

I think this one is easy to understand because many of us are super cranky when we are tired…

But YES, 100% yes. It’s not just the act of taking a nap or taking a quick snooze, it’s the deep sleep or REM cycles that matter the most. During this REM cycle our dogs’ brains are working hard at transferring newly learned information over to other areas of the brain. And at this time it is also helping them to rid their minds of excess information.

REM is also the cycle where dogs experience dreams. This may be when you see their legs twitching and they give off little barks. It’s important not to wake a dog up on the stage as they may be very upset with you if you do. Studies show that during this cycle the brain waves are similar to the brain waves of when they’re hunting, so they are probably dreaming of chasing prey.

All of the cycles of sleep are important but imagine a dog who never receives REM sleep. Think of all of the information that is now backlogged in their brain. Lacking that REM cycle will bring them to a point of irritability because they are on information overload.

Dogs that are denied REM sleep suffer from behavioral disturbances and will not return to normal until they are back into a regular rhythm of REM sleep.

So always be sure that the environment your dog lives in is one that can allow him to go into all the sleep cycles.
