Obviously if a “backyard breeder” is the comparative group to a “responsible breeder then they are not considered “responsible”, but why?

A backyard breeder is one that breeds a dog solely based off of financial interests or sentimental feelings (they think their dog is just so cute) but lack an interest in breed standards. They cannot guarantee anything other than a “dog”.
A responsible breeder will provide you with a purebred dog and can guarantee the dog is of sound temperament & health. They can guarantee this by providing you with appropriate health information, a detailed pedigree of at least 3 generations and an AKC registration slip. A responsible breeder should also be affiliated with a national or local club dedicated to understanding and improving the breed. It is also important to take the facility into consideration and check for sanitary conditions.

A responsible breeder will also keep tabs on their puppies. Meaning once the puppy has been adopted that does not mean that they wash their hands of that dog. They will happily take that dog back if any problems arise. Good luck getting a backyard breeder to do the same. A responsible breeder is truly invested in their dogs.

I personally do not support backyard breeders and never will. As a trainer, I see so many dogs that have genetic issues; owners who are frustrated and dogs that are unhappy; so I will always support responsible breeders who truly care about providing dogs with the sound temperament & health that we desire our dogs to have. You may pay more for a dog from a responsible breeder but in the long run, it is a million more times worth it.
