Advanced Obedience

Basic obedience is what most dog owners provide their dogs with; Sit, Down and Stay are some of the basic obedience skills worked on in your average household. Name recognition and recall are not typically worked on intentionally but the dog usually catches on to what their name or “come” means by the way it is used on a daily basis. But the training typically stops here.

What does an advanced level look like?
This includes a lot of the same commands but now your dog is able to do it for longer periods of time, in different locations among different distractions and at a distance.
For example your dog will be able to sit and hold the sit for longer periods of time, you may be able to ask your dog to sit from a distance where you are on one side of the room and your dog is on the other as well as being able to hold a sit in a different location among many different distractions.

But why is it important?

It’s all about focus, dogs are animals with their own thoughts and feelings so when you take them outside among the many distractions why should they focus on you instead of all of the wonderful things out there? When you practice these advanced skills with your dog it teaches them how to stay focused on you instead of reacting to the world outside. It helps them to develop the control to come back to you when you call them even though the outside world is so much fun. It helps them to see you as more valuable than what is out there.
Advanced obedience helps to build your dog’s confidence and impulse control which is something all dogs need help with.

Think about all of the ways you can advance your dog’s training!
