As the weather gets warmer we all love to head outdoors but it’s important that you be mindful of how the heat can affect your dog.
As you may already know, dogs do not sweat like we do, in fact they must drink water and pant in order to bring their body temperature down. Dogs that are brachycephalic (have a short head and snout), have an even more difficult time in the heat because they do not pant as efficiently as longer-nosed dogs.
During this time of the year, you may have to change your routine a bit in order to prevent your dog from experiencing heatstroke. For example choosing cooler times of the day for training and exercise sessions. Always provide plenty of cool, fresh water and provide your dog with more opportunities to rest in the shade.
A dog's normal temperature is between 100° and 103°F; anything higher can result in serious problems. If a dog is exposed to excessive heat for a long period of time it can result in heatstroke. This usually occurs when the temperature is so hot that the dog is unable to keep up with cooling himself down.
Some signs of heatstroke are:
Early Signs:
* Rapid breathing
* Heavy panting
* Bright red gums and tongue
* Excessive drooling
* Difficulty maintaining balance
Advanced Signs:
* Lethargy
* White or blue gums
* Labored, noisy breathing
* Uncontrollable urination or defecation
* Shock
If your dog begins to exhibit signs of heatstroke, try some cooling methods such as getting him into the shade and spraying him with cool or tepid water. You can even put a damp towel over his body. Don’t place him in cold or ice water, this can close a dog‘s pores and put him into shock. Head to your vet ASAP. Dogs that are exhibiting the advanced signs may require fluids, medication, support, and oxygen.
So the best way to help your dog through heatstroke is by taking preventative measures-always be prepared and think ahead before taking your dog outdoors.
