Reliablity

Many may argue and say that their dog’s recall is 100% reliable every time but to be honest I don’t think any one can say that will full certainty.

I would feel more comfortable saying that training can provide your dog with a recall that has 99.99% reliability.

Why?

Because there is no way we can possibly prepare our dogs for every single situation out there. Maybe our dogs have perfect recall for the experiences we have practiced. But we haven’t experienced “everything” with our dogs, so how do we really know?

We can build positive associations to our verbal cue, we can give our dogs the highest value rewards, we can practice impulse control and set up as many different scenarios as we can think of, but one day there may be a scenario you never anticipated or perhaps its a scenario where you just didn’t have the proper resources to incorporate into your training.

This topic is a perfect example of why we say “Dogs are not Robots”. Training does not control your dog’s thoughts, it influences their perspective.

Now I am by no means saying training can’t help. If recall is something you struggle with, training can DEFINITELY give you better results, just not perfect results, so if perfect is what you’re after, you may need to reconsider your own ideas and expectations.

Every dog is different as well. Some dogs recall quite easily with little training because they truly want to be with their human, while others struggle because of a high prey drive. But even with training, there is still no guarantee that your dog will recall successfully the first time, every time, 100% of the time.

It is because of this uncertainty that many of us turn to the E collar. We are fully aware that even with all of the training we put in, there is ALWAYS a chance our dogs will make the wrong decision one day. It’s not that our dogs need the E collar for recall on a daily basis, it’s that we understand that a dog is a being with its own mind and thoughts and the E collar is our back up for those “just in case” moments.
