Fear Period

You have just adopted a puppy at 8 weeks old, the puppy is playful, friendly happy…but then all of a sudden that confident puppy now appears to be cautious and nervous. What happened?

No need to worry, this is completely normal. At this time, a puppy’s brain and central nervous system are beginning to mature to their adult levels and this is their way of adjusting to that. In addition, it’s what helps puppies bond quickly to their new owners because during these moments of insecurity, the puppy will seek security, typically from their humans.

During this time you should be understanding and patient, encouraging your puppy along the way-guiding them through times where they may feel uncertain. Does not mean that you should withhold them from the world, quite the opposite, still continue to expose them but in a way that is positive; not traumatic. Puppies are quite sensitive to traumatic experiences and improper handling or or care can result in long lasting emotional

Socialization is still an important part throughout this time. Your pup will eventually bounce back to his normal self toward the end of the 10th week.

This is yet another benefit of adopting a puppy from a responsible breeder. They will have laid a solid foundation for your pup so that when the fear period is over he is able to bounce back easily.

So during this time, continue to expose your puppy to the world and what it has to offer but in a positive, non-stressful way. This will help to create a positive attitude towards people and new experiences all while teaching the puppy that human beings and their world are part of his pack. And be ready, because a second fear period will likely occur between the age of 6 to 14 months.
