Position Stay VS Stay

I want to bring some clarity to this concept. A lot of people wonder why when we practice a place stay, down stay or sit stay, we don’t actually use the word “stay”.

It’s not bad if you do but for my dogs, I want them to understand that whatever position I put them in, I expect them to stay like that until released. I don’t want for them to wait for me to have to say “stay” and I don’t want to give them two commands- I want what I have asked of them to be extremely clear.

It’s also not that I don’t teach stay, I do, but I teach it in isolation, so it’s typically used if my dogs are in a position that I have not put them in; especially if they are standing or in the middle of moving like what you’ve saw in the last video, I didn’t want my dog to lay or sit in the middle of the woods nor do I want him to hesitate doing so because it might be uncomfortable, therefore it was more beneficial to ask for a stay in a situation like that.

These are both part of impulse control training, visit both the IGTV and story highlights titled “Impulse Control” for some ideas on how to get this started.
