Are Bells A Good way To Potty Tain?

Do using bells really help our dogs with potty training?

Well, let’s think first about what predictable pattern we are providing.

Dog rings bell. Human let’s dog out.
Therefore ringing the bell = dog goes outside.

We don’t really know what the dog’s reason for wanting to go outside was, so we can’t say that it works.

Most dogs ring the bell just simply because they want to go out. If they happen to go potty while they’re out there, that could just be a coincidence. Unfortunately, this creates a dog who will start ringing the bell every 30 minutes to go outside and at this point many humans get frustrated and remove the bell.

But if the dog is ringing it because they have to go potty well then clearly the dog is already potty trained understanding that outside is where he needs to go BUT, this prohibits the dog from learning how to hold it for longer periods of time if we let them out every single time they ring it.

This also puts the responsibility on the dog to tell us how to schedule our day.
instead, try setting a routine for your dog, set a timer on your phone to go off so that your dog begins to see this new predictable pattern, that he will be let out periodically throughout the day.
