Dogs should rely on YOU

It’s not that you can never expect this. There are definitely situations or scenarios where dogs learn from one another especially when there’s a new dog coming into a pack. But typically they are learning routine- they are learning how to move about the day successfully.

But too often I hear of people acquiring a new dog and expecting their current dog to teach it everything. Or they think it is cute when their nervous dog relies on the more confident dog for guidance….. but this is an awful way to lead your pack-because you are not “really” leading your pack.

What kind of leader would we be if the followers followed each other? Would we allow three-year-olds to guide other three-year-olds? Absolutely not.

Once you have earned the trust of the new dog, be it a rescue or a puppy, it is safe for you to direct that dog’s every move. You should be the one providing the expectations, structure, routine as well as affection and guidance, not your current dogs.

When any of your dogs are feeling unsure about something, it is YOU they should look to for guidance. YOU are the one they should trust to resolve any issues. YOU are the one they should be able to rely on for clarity.

Please do not put this responsibility on your current dog-that is too much for any dog to be expected to handle and it will only result in issues down the road.
