Bribing vs Rewarding

If you’re not paying attention, then the two may look like identical methods but the results of using these methods can be extremely different.
The first part of the video shows me bribing my dog with a treat (not luring bc he already knows these positions), basically what I am communicating to my dog is that I will give him that treat if/when he does what I’m asking. It may not sound like such a bad thing but in reality what happens with this method is that we end up with a dog who will only do what you ask if you have a reward available and that reward must be of higher value than what else is around. This is where you will see most people say that sometimes their dog listens and sometimes their dog doesn’t…..50-50 chance.

In the second part of the video you see me using the treat as a reward for doing what I asked, so the dog does not even see the reward until I have marked with a “yes”. With this method I am teaching my dog that when they make good decisions they will be rewarded but what it really comes down to is HOPE. They truly have no idea if they’re going to be rewarded but they will complete the command solely based on the hope that they may be rewarded. This allows my dog to make these decisions often enough to help build it into a reflexive behavior without the opportunity to blow me off.
